Trust sits at the heart of every successful partnership in the upstream sector. Sofia Silvestre, AI Delivery Manager, and Edgar Leitao, Director, Upstream & Digital Innovation Centre at Galp, explored how responsible AI is helping strengthen that trust by transforming the way joint operation audits are planned, executed and delivered.
Drawing on Galp’s experience as a non-operating partner in major upstream assets, Edgar explained the unique challenges of auditing complex operations without direct control of the asset. Faced with vast quantities of drilling reports, vessel logs and operational records, audit teams often struggle to review information comprehensively within the available timeframe. Rather than simply improving compliance, Galp‘s objective was to create an audit process that delivers greater assurance, stronger recommendations and increased confidence between operating partners.
The presentation introduced Cyclops, an AI-powered solution developed to automate the capture, organisation and analysis of operational documentation. By relieving auditors of repetitive manual tasks, the platform enables teams to focus on higher-value activities, uncover meaningful insights and spend more time assessing operational risks instead of searching for information.
Sofia then explained the responsible AI principles embedded within the solution. From optical character recognition and synthetic datasets to confidence scoring, human validation, content safety, governance and resilient model deployment, she demonstrated how trust is designed into every stage of the AI lifecycle. Rather than replacing professional judgement, the system equips auditors with transparent, explainable outputs that support more informed decision-making while keeping people firmly in control.
