Calum Maclean, Projects Director at Marine Technical Limits, explored how trusted inspection data can help operators maximise the value of limited access to FPSO hull structures and make better long-term integrity decisions.
The presentation focused on the practical realities of inspecting offshore assets that may remain on station for 20 years or more. Unlike conventional tankers, FPSOs often face extended service lives, limited inspection windows and increasing pressure to reduce maintenance costs as production declines. Calum explained why this creates a difficult balance between cost control, safety, asset life extension and the risk of major unexpected repairs.
A key theme was the importance of capturing reliable data during the short opportunities available for inspection. Hull spaces are large, complex and difficult to access, while historic information is often incomplete due to asset age, ownership changes and inconsistent inspection practices. Marine Technical Limits has addressed this by creating a digital inspection process that defines inspection tasks, records both findings and “good” data, and provides a clearer view of the vessel’s condition.
Calum also discussed where AI can add value, particularly in cross-checking, summarising and supporting repetitive review tasks. However, he reinforced that AI can only enhance trusted data; it cannot replace the need for accurate inspection planning, structured data capture and expert judgement.
