From PHA to Living Risk – Using AI to Close the Gap Between Analysis & Operations by Mariante Van Der Merwe, Product Manager at Wolters Kluwer Enablon, at Future Oil & Gas 2026.

Process safety teams have long relied on structured analysis to identify and manage risk, but the challenge has always been keeping that insight connected to day-to-day operations. In this presentation, Mariante Van Der Merwe, Product Manager at Wolters Kluwer Enablon, examined how AI can help close the gap between process hazard analysis and live operational risk management.

The session focused on how organisations can move from static, siloed risk assessments towards more connected and dynamic ways of visualising operational risk. Mariante discussed the role of bow tie analysis, barrier status, control of work and permit processes in creating a clearer picture of how risk is understood, managed and acted on across operational environments.

A key theme was the practical use of AI to reduce manual effort while keeping expert judgement at the centre. By using AI to generate, review and enhance bow ties from existing analysis, incident reports and curated industry data, teams can accelerate tasks that traditionally require significant time and specialist input. However, Mariante reinforced that AI should support, not replace, the expertise needed to validate findings and ensure accuracy.

The presentation also highlighted the importance of connected platforms, standardised data and operational integration. When process safety information is linked across systems, AI can help make risk more visible, more actionable and more closely aligned with frontline decision-making.

Watch the full presentation to see how AI can support the journey from PHA to living risk, helping organisations strengthen process safety, improve risk visualisation and bring analysis closer to operations.
